A Top Safety Pick+ rating is ideal when looking for a new car.

When choosing your next vehicle, it’s vital that you explore the vehicle’s safety ratings. However, with so many different safety ratings and awards out there, it can be difficult to decipher what certain titles mean.

The two main vehicle safety ratings you should look for are from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)

The NHTSA administers ratings via a star system, where the most stars that a vehicle can get is five stars. This system is designed to provide information about crash protection and rollover safety, where the more stars the better.

Meanwhile, the IIHS has two honorary titles for vehicles that they deem particularly impressive when it comes to safety: “Top Safety Pick” and “Top Safety Pick+,” where the former is a very good score, but the latter is ideal.
