The automotive industry has come a long way in recent years when it comes to safety technology. Honda’s new Smart Intersection technology elaborates on this technology, to help reduce accidents that occur at intersections.

The Honda Smart Intersection tech uses vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication to alert drivers of an object up ahead — even if that object is behind a building and out of sight. This technology will integrate four intersection-mounted cameras that vehicles can communicate with, to alert drivers to any vehicles and pedestrians within a 300-foot range.

Currently, an estimated 20 percent of all traffic deaths in the United States occur at intersections. Honda hopes this new technology will help improve safety on the roads.

“Honda believes that V2X technology […] can play a role in our dream for a zero-collision society […] We believe this research will give us a better understanding of how V2X technologies can be further advanced and most effectively deployed for the benefit of all road users,” said Ted Klaus, vice president of research at Honda R&D Americas, Inc.

Honda plans on testing the Smart Intersection technology in Marysville, Ohio in a real-world environment. We await more details on this exciting development from the brand.
